In response to recent guidance announced by the Centers for Disease Control and in our continued effort to keep patrons and staff safe, Earth Day Trash Bash 2020 is canceled. Earth Day Trash Bash, Iowa's largest Earth Day volunteer event, is a collaborative project between the Cities & citizens of Des Moines, West Des Moines, Clive, Norwalk, Pleasant Hill, Johnston, Urbandale, Polk County Conservation, Polk Soil and Water Conservation District, West Side Chamber of Commerce, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, Ingersoll Business Committee, Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and Water Works. Thanks to corporate commitment to a better environment and a healthier community, in 2019, we had 93 volunteer teams at 75 project locations throughout the greater Des Moines metro. Volunteers remove litter, beautify public lands and clean out invasive species. They removed almost 45,000 pounds of trash, recyclables, tires, metal and brush, along with almost 12 pounds of cigarette butts, recycled more than 9,572 plastic bags, cleaned more than 10 miles of trails, cleared 7.5 acres of invasive species, moved more than 100 cubic yards of mulch and more. view_list Friday Schedule view_module Saturday Schedule local_play Show Your Commitment stars Captain Information supervisor_account Sponsorship receipt Registration Friday - Schedule Friday, April 24 - Kick-off with a Bash downtown at Noon, including lunch, sponsor recognition and educational booths. Help Friends of SW 9th keep this newly renovated park clean by walking the hills of MacRae, bagging litter and bringing it to the curb for pick-up. Tools and supplies are provided. FREE food and drinks for volunteers! Wear close-toed shoes, long pants and long sleeves to protect yourself. Minors must have a parent/legal guardian complete our minor waiver to participate. When: 9:00 a.m. - Noon Who: City of Des Moines – Public Works Right of Ways Location: Pioneer Park, Gray’s Woods and South Park Neighborhoods place What: Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day in your neighborhood on Saturday, April 25th. Grab a trash bag, gather your neighbors and help clean up your neighborhood. Register your group with Public Works so they can swing by after and pick up your trashy treasures. You provide the supplies and we provide the pick-up! When: 10:00 a.m. - Noon Who: City of West Des Moines Location: West Des Moines City Hall, 4200 Mills Civic Parkway place What: Earth Day Family Fun-Earth Day is a perfect day for you and your family to come enjoy some FREE family friendly outdoor activities. You can go kayaking, canoeing, fishing or you may to make a craft or relax in our outdoor lounge and enjoy a cup of coffee or cocoa! FREE tree saplings will be handed out to celebrate and the first 100 families will receive a painted lady caterpillar to raise. Come help us celebrate. Earth Day means Action! 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day in the U.S. began in 1970 as 20 million Americans, from all walks of life, mobilized in an effort to change our environment. Today, Earth Day is celebrated by more than a billion people per year in 192 countries. Earth Day Trash Bash, a local event in honor of Earth Day, is Iowa's largest volunteer Earth Day effort. Show Your Commitment The Metro is divided into team volunteer project locations. Captains register their teams by March 30th . Teams are then matched with projects. Captains must attend the April 8th Captain’s Meeting where they will receive a free Earth Day shirt as a thank-you for leading a team, lunch wristbands for the kick-off bash, safety information and project details. Volunteers will receive a free lunch at our Kick-Off Bash at Cowles Commons on April 24. PLEASE NOTE: Before you register, make sure your team is available for both Friday, April 24 and the rain date Monday, April 27. If it's just a spring shower we will work, but if it's lightening or the weather makes the projects unsafe, they will be rescheduled to Monday to make sure they still get done! Ye Olde Bag can be won collecting plastic grocery bags to bring to the kick-off for recycling. The bags must be counted and bagged before you drop them off so they don't blow away on site.
